Conclusions
These are problems the participants have with cycling because of their vision. These problems can be starting points for the design process.
Cycling in the dark
In the dark the contrast is very low, which makes it very hard to distinguish the side in the road and makes it hard to see obstacles on, and besides, the road.
Social cues
Because they can see bad, they cannot recognise the social cues. It is hard to see signals from other vehicles, such as flashing lights and hand gestures.
Obstacles
The participants cannot see obstacles on the road and see approaching traffic only very late.
Adaption light
If the light intensity changes, such as in a tunnel, their eyes need a lot of time to adjust.
Bad weather
Rain or snow can influence their sight as well because there is less contrast and the light is more scattered.
Road detection
They cannot detect the side of the road, especially in the dark. Both participants find it hard to see where the curb starts.
