Thinking aloud
What is it?
The thinking aloud protocol is a method of user testing in which the participant describes their train of thought while performing an activity.
Objective
The objective is to understand what the participants thinks about and which problems they may face during the activity. In this particular project, the activity is biking through urban areas. The participant is visually impaired and navigates differently along the road and has a different thought process. Through doing "Thinking aloud" and biking with her, we immerse in their world and their experience. This helps us better to understand what to focus on and to make a concept that would benefit them in this activity.
Methodology
In this method it is of utmost importance that the thoughts of the participant are not influenced by the person who is joining in on the activity. The questions should not be guiding, but rather encouraging to continue their thoughts and telling this out loud.
If the information is influenced, it does not accurately represent when the activity is done by themselves.
Questions are sometimes not necessary if the participant is actively speaking and mentioning their thoughts with some explanations. In case the participant is quieter, or some things are not clear, continuation questions may be asked.
Questions to continue the conversation:
What is going on in your mind right now?
Why did you make this decision?
Can you tell me more about…?
