Interview roles

Facilitator

  • Leads the interview

  • Has the contact with the participant

  • Is kind and subtle

  • Pay attention to:

    • Let the participant speak and does not interrupt. Is the participant feeling comfortable? if not, switch subject.

    • Try to make eye contact.

    • Tell what you want to hear yourself first, then it is easier for the participant to follow.

    • Be polite.

Notetaker

  • Take notes of the interview

  • Make visual notes if possible. If the person is implying something, try to sketch it and show the participant to confirm

  • Pay attention to:

    • Is the facilitator is missing something and if you have to step in?

    • Does the participant feel comfortable or not?

    • Do I need to make things more clear with for example a drawing?

    • Does the facilitator need something?

    • What is the storyline?

    • What is important to write down and what not?

    • Does the participant of we ourselves have a good idea?

Observer

  • Observes the interview from a little distance

  • Takes notes on the persons behaviours

  • Watches how the interview goes, write down what is out of the ordinary

  • Write down feedback for the facilitator and notetaker as well

  • Notice the surrounding, are there things that differ from usual spaces?

  • Do they use tools for their bad vision?

  • Are there made any changes to the office?

  • Pay attention to:

    • The participants way of talking: Do they make eye contact?

    • Do they use non-verbal communication? And how?

    • Can they see the drawings we make?

    • Are they able to follow everything?
